The entire film is a very strange one as it contains a story that constantly keeps you off guard, some fine performances and a bizarre atmosphere that just hangs over the entire thing.

Writer-director Chris Fisher deserves quite a bit of credit by taking a familiar set-up good man kidnapped by evil and doing something rather fresh and original with it.

I'm going to avoid any major spoilers but I do think the film comes up somewhat short in whatever message it's trying to get across but there's still enough good stuff here to make it worth viewing.

One thing are the two lead performances with both Wilson and Jackson turning in fine work. Wilson does a very believable job playing this loser who constantly lets people push him around.

I thought the actor made you care for this character while at the same time hating him for not being more of a man.

Jackson often falls into playing himself but that's not the case here as he completely loses himself in this character. Jackson plays the part with a certain edge that actually helps the film and especially in some of the darker comic moments, which there are a few of and he makes them very funny.

As you'd expect, there's a twist at the end and in a rare case I think it actually works. The entire set-up is a pretty crazy one and it doesn't make sense all of the time but it did keep me interested in what was going on and I was constantly wondering what was going to happen next.

The film isn't a complete success but I think it's good entertainment. Sign In. Keep track of everything you watch; tell your friends.

I got frustrated at John for his lack of courage when dealing with the bad guy. Well the plot kinda dragged but I'm satisfied with the ending.

Apr 25, JBP rated it did not like it Shelves: read-in Sometimes I'm baffled by the average scores on goodreads--this is one of those times.

I only finished this awful book just to unleash a rare one star review! This was just terrible, from start to finish, which was kind of a surprise because I've read a few other Berger books Being Invisible, Neighbors, Little Big Man and enjoyed those a lot.

Same direct Berger style but the story of a man who is accidentally drawn into a hellish day of crime he can't get out of absolutely drove me crazy.

Frank Sometimes I'm baffled by the average scores on goodreads--this is one of those times. Frankly, the lead character John is a complete and utter moron.

It's hard to take when Berger paints each person in this book so one-note, obvious, naive and simpleminded. John never gains any smarts the entire story no matter what has gone down.

Let me say it again: ugh! View all 4 comments. Dec 05, Aaron Martz rated it it was amazing. A freaky, disturbing thriller about an everyday man who is kidnapped by a seemingly cold-blooded and thoughtless maniac who eventually reveals his intellectual stance on his behavior.

This book, which takes place over the course of a single evening, is gut-wrenching, unbearable to read in places, but nonetheless captivating and thoroughly engrossing.

Berger is an author of almost unequal intelligence gifted with a supreme high brow humor which he often employs to skewer middle class values.

It's A freaky, disturbing thriller about an everyday man who is kidnapped by a seemingly cold-blooded and thoughtless maniac who eventually reveals his intellectual stance on his behavior.

It's a shame he is not more widely read. Dec 09, Jasun Horsley rated it really liked it. Berger has a knack for creating ambiguous characters and scenes and for pulling you into the action.

The title is a bit misleading or histrionic; it's not so much about meeting evil as it is about making a series of serious misjudgments and how things can rapidly snowball from inconvenient to nightmarish due to the simple inability to say "No.

Shelves: ebook , read-in This is part 2 of my descent into literary psychopath stories. Berger is a top-notch writer. I plowed through the book in a day.

It's also darkly funny, in a way that surprises. At first I thought the main character was idiotic in an extreme way that I found unbelievable.

But as the novel progressed, he started reminding me of a few people I have know. Idiotic and believable. Nov 16, David rated it liked it.

This is not one of Berger's best, the main character is just a little too feckless for the book to be compelling. Also, the relationship between the wife and husband seems way off to the way normal couples interact.

I completely lost interest in John after he prepared to sigh his way through what was shaping up to be the rape of a boy. There's also incredibly drawn out interior monologues of John's rationalization for continuing on long past the point of logic, which I have come to suspect have a sort of intent on the part of the author, pos if you like the feeling of watching horror films and screaming at the actors to stop acting stupid and take charge of their own survival, then this is the book for you.

There's also incredibly drawn out interior monologues of John's rationalization for continuing on long past the point of logic, which I have come to suspect have a sort of intent on the part of the author, possibly a send up of householder values, but it's protracted beyond the point of tedium -- same with the excruciatingly long dinner scene at the end.

There was some hope that the book would turn and have John the one who was the evil -- as when John starts to loath his wife during the dinner something the author made it easy to do with his one-note presentation -- the whole contrived lack of communication between them was one of the main drivers of the plot spiraling out of control.

Dec 07, Christopher Sutch rated it really liked it. The writing is fairly compact and to the point, and the action is contained to a single day.

The problem, however, is that, unlike its two previous companion novels, this book verges away from philosophy and into realism which, ironically, weakens its emotional impact.

Where the previous two novels of this kind by Berger contain many strange and inexplicable events that heighten the uneasiness and sense of alienation suffered by both protagonists and readers, this novel remains firmly planted in reality and thus heads toward an all-too-easily foreseen denouement.

Nov 18, Lisa rated it it was ok Shelves: did-not-finish. I saw the audio on Hoopla and started listening to it. I guess, Richie, the "evil" t 2.

I have no desire to be alongride for. Richie soon forces John into a wild and violent killing spree but for reasons that the troubled man can't figure out.

Video John gets out of the car, and the trucker approaches him with a tire iron. Suddenly, Richie hits the trucker with the car, killing the trucker.

It turns out that Richie, who killed Rhonda, is a murderous psychopath. Local cops Frank and Latisha think John is the killer.

John realizes that this was not the day to play good samaritan. He and Tammy are in for a violent ride that they don't want to be on.

Tammy escapes from Richie, and John tries to escape, Richie, disguised as a deputy, recaptures John. John forces Richie to let him go, and Richie threatens Joanie and the kids.

After a massacre at a store, John is arrested by Frank, who refuses to believe John's story about Richie, and that night, Latisha learns that John is not the killer—murders were committed in a diner while John was in custody, and Tammy has corroborated John's story about Richie.

Frank releases John, who goes home with Joanie and the kids, and Frank and Latisha, who thought Richie was killed at the diner, learn that he's still alive, and may be on his way to the Felton house.

In fact, Richie is already there, harassing the Feltons, and it's raining heavily. While they are eating dinner, Richie explains to John that Joanie is having an affair and had, in fact, hired Richie to kill him for insurance money.

John attacks Joanie being egged on by Richie, she tries to stab John with a knife and he takes it from her ready to do the same, but instead stabs Richie and she then uses one of John's golf clubs to attack Richie as well.

John and Richie crash through a window and fall into the pool hole struggling, which has been filled with water because of the rain.

Frank and Latisha arrive, and Latisha fires a shot that kills Richie. That night, in bed, Joanie asks if everything is going to be okay, and Joanie turns out her light.

John doesn't answer and turns out his light, ominously whistling Dixie, just like Richie. From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. Meeting Evil Theatrical release poster.
